Rodent Facts

Rodents are warm blooded mammals that reproduce at an alarming rate and can very quickly become a problem.  They have oversized front teeth for gnawing and cheek teeth, which are adapted for chewing.  Rodents can harbour and transmit a number of serious diseases.  They may also introduce disease carrying parasites such as fleas and ticks into your home.  Rodents chew on a variety of materials and can cause severe damage in and around domestic and commercial properties.  Rodents can inflict a great amount of structural damage.  They can cause serious fires through gnawing electrical cable, floods through puncturing pipes and even death by chewing through gas pipes.  The insurance sector have estimated that rodent damage is responsible for a quarter of all electrical fires in buildings . Rodents are adaptable, highly mobile and breed rapidly, this combination makes rodent pest control a difficult task for the untrained individual.  It is recommended that a professional pest removal services company is contacted.  Here at Sykes Pest Control we are knowledgeable and trained in rodent pest control and our local rat exterminators, squirrel exterminators and rodent pest removal services team have access to a range of professional use traps and rodenticides which are not available to the general public.
Rats
There are two species of rats found in Britain, Rattus Norvegicus, more commonly known as the Brown Rat or Common Rat and the Rattus Rattus, which is more commonly known as the Black Rat or Ship Rat.  The latter is now rarely found in the UK.  The Brown Rat is the larger of the two, often weighing over half a kilo and measuring 23cm excluding the tail.  Both species breed rapidly and become sexually mature at around 3 months.  Each female can produce 3-12 litters of between 6-8 young in one year. The population can rise dramatically and it is advised that professional local rat exterminators are contacted to ensure eradication of the problem promptly. Rats live in any area that provides food, water and shelter.  Within a home they will live in roof spaces, wall cavities or under floor boards.  In gardens they will burrow into grassy banks, under garden structures, patio areas and under decking.  Not only do rats carry harmful diseases which they can spread to humans, they can also inflict a great amount of structural damage. Mice
The House Mouse, and sometimes Long-Tailed Field Mouse are found in buildings as they seek the warmth and shelter needed for nesting sites and food.  The House Mouse is between 60-90mm excluding the tail and weighs less than 25g.  Fur colour varies between light brown and grey.  Mice live in nests that they often build inside houses, in places such as attics, under floors and in wall cavities.  They can squeeze through cracks as small as 5mm!  Mice breed very rapidly, a sexually mature female can have between 5-10 litters of 6-8 young a year.  Mice have a compulsive need to gnaw in order to keep their incisor teeth worn down to a constant length.  Electrical cables, water and gas pipes and woodwork may all be seriously damaged by mice.  Call now for help and advice from our pest removal services team.
Squirrels
Squirrels were deliberately introduced to the UK during the 19th century.  The grey squirrel has since spread throughout most of mainland England and Wales.  They mainly reside in broadleaved and mixed woodlands but are also a common resident of urban parks and gardens.  Squirrels frequently enter building roof spaces and once inside inflict serious amounts of damage.  They chew wood work and water pipes, strip insulation from electrical wiring and tear up fibreglass insulation.  This can not only be very dangerous but also very costly. It is advised that professional squirrel exterminators are contacted.  Here at Sykes Pest Control our squirrel exterminators have the access to tools and rodenticides that are not available to the general public.  For help and advice call now to speak to our squirrel exterminators, part of our pest removal services team.
